Seattle City (spot)Light: Chris Bock, Journeyman Carpenter

THE BASICS

Division: Carpenter Shop

How long have you been at City Light? March 2025

Tell us about your role. As carpenters, our scope of work is broad. We bring experience and working knowledge across all aspects of general construction. On large commercial projects, we plan and implement each phase of the work, from forming foundations and building structures to coordinating with other trades and completing punch list items on the final walkthrough.

At Seattle City Light, we get to work in the underground transformer vaults, substations, and hydropower projects across the state. Much of that involves constructing concrete forms, pouring and finishing the concrete, and building temporary protection. We get to travel and work in so many different locations, including the hydro dam projects in these beautiful, pristine natural environments. We also carry out demolition, repair, and maintenance. Our Carpenter Shop is awesome and has the space and equipment to build and repair furniture for the Shops and all our facilities.

Tell us about your family/pets: My wonderful spouse and favorite person is Kyla Gibson. She also works for the City of Seattle as a dispatch supervisor for the Seattle Police Department. We’ve been together for 19 awesome years. We have two long hair tuxedo cats, Sushi and Sashimi. They’re our little weirdos and provide us with hours of entertainment with their antics.

What was your first job and what did you do? Worked in my family’s business from childhood. We’ve had several over the years: commercial fishing and seafood business, logging, construction, heavy equipment operating and earthwork. I was lucky to grow up learning a wide array of skills from my family and also had the fortune of attending schools that still had classes in machine shop, welding, woodworking, and mechanics.

What do you like most about your role? I love creating and building things, and problem solving. Also, I love the daily variety of projects we get assigned, and getting to work in so many awesome environments and locations.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? Buy a bigger shop. I build and restore vintage motorcycles out of my single-car garage. And I keep too many of them!

What is your favorite travel memory/experience? Dang. Got too many, and all of them are my favorite!

If you could use two words to describe yourself, what would they be? Charming Anti-Hero

What’s your favorite ‘80s movie? “Blade Runner”
